Welcome to Room 8 -- a room full of 6th-grade writers and scientists in action!
My name is Jessica McFerren, and I have been teaching for nearly 30 years. It's my passion! My teaching philosophy is pretty simple: be kind and fair, know your subject matter, understand the mindset of middle-schoolers, teach enthusiastically, and keep students engaged. In other words, teach your students the way you would like your child's teacher to teach them.
I make an effort to keep English and science exciting and fun. My students will learn plenty of hands-on science this year, and they will undoubtedly enjoy it. In addition, they will engage in discussions about the process, results, and conclusions (Scientific Method) of their experiments. My goal is to have them leave the classroom each day knowing more science and being even more curious about it!
In English, my students will read and write using a wide variety of genres and engage in lively, deep discussions about the world that their reading unveils. My goal is to ignite a passion for writing and spark a love for reading.
